About the role

An experienced marine professional is sought to join a leading port organisation as Deputy Harbour Master. This senior leadership role is responsible for the safe, efficient and compliant operation of one of Ireland’s busiest ports. Working with the Harbour Master and wider marine leadership team, the role covers day-to-day marine operations, regulatory compliance, emergency response and future harbour service development. The position includes a 1-in-4 Duty Harbour Master on-call rota supporting operational resilience. It would suit an experienced Harbour Master, Deputy Harbour Master or Master Mariner with strong leadership capability and an interest in a strategic, shore-based management role. Responsibilities include leading vessel movements, acting as Duty Harbour Master when required, overseeing vessel traffic management, berth planning and marine operations, leading incident and pollution response, ensuring compliance with maritime legislation and port regulations, conducting investigations, producing reports, implementing corrective actions, coaching teams, supporting strategic projects, and building relationships with regulators and stakeholders. Requirements include STCW II/2 Unlimited Master Mariner Certificate of Competency or equivalent, significant experience as a Ship's Master or in senior marine management, knowledge of pilotage, ship handling, marine risk management and port operations, leadership experience in a 24/7 environment, strong understanding of maritime legislation and safety management, and experience with investigations, reports and operational improvements. Shore-based marine management experience is desirable, though exceptional Masters looking to transition ashore will also be considered.
