Starting out: what to have in place

A first role still comes with certificates. Which ones depends on the sector, and each is set by a body you can check.

Safety training for oil and gas

BOSIET is the basic offshore safety induction and emergency training standard of OPITO. It includes helicopter emergencies, with a focus on escaping from a helicopter after ditching.

OPITO sets a maximum of four years between BOSIET and its refresher, FOET. A FOET certificate is valid for four years in turn.

Safety training for wind

Wind farms work to the Basic Safety Training standard of the Global Wind Organisation. It has five modules: First Aid, Manual Handling, Fire Awareness, Working at Height and Sea Survival.

Each training record is valid for 24 months and has to be renewed before that period ends.

Working on a vessel

Seafarers are trained and certified under the STCW Convention of the International Maritime Organization. Basic training in personal survival techniques and in fire prevention and firefighting has to be refreshed every five years.

Seafarer medical certificate

In the United Kingdom the seafarer medical certificate is the ENG1. It is valid for at most two years, or one year for seafarers under 18. The approved doctor can issue a shorter one on health grounds.

Other flag states issue their own certificate. The listing or the employer will say which one a vessel accepts.

How do I get offshore with no experience?

Pick the sector first, because the certificates differ: oil and gas, wind or vessels. Get the safety training and the medical for that sector, then apply for the roles that train on the job, such as roustabout, ordinary seaman, deckhand, cadet or trainee technician.
