Seafarers are trained and certified under the STCW Convention of the International Maritime Organization. Basic training in personal survival techniques and in fire prevention and firefighting has to be refreshed every five years.
In the United Kingdom the seafarer medical certificate is the ENG1. It is valid for at most two years, or one year for seafarers under 18. The approved doctor can issue a shorter one on health grounds.
Other flag states issue their own certificate. The listing or the employer will say which one a vessel accepts.
In the United States, the Maritime Transportation Security Act requires a TWIC card for workers who need access to secure areas of maritime facilities and vessels. The Transportation Security Administration issues it, and it is valid for five years from the date of issue.
