BOSIET is the basic offshore safety induction and emergency training standard of OPITO. It includes helicopter emergencies, with a focus on escaping from a helicopter after ditching.
OPITO sets a maximum of four years between BOSIET and its refresher, FOET. A FOET certificate is valid for four years in turn.
MIST is an OPITO standard that introduces new starts to the main safety elements of offshore oil and gas work. It has no entry requirements and is valid for four years.
Experienced offshore workers renew it every four years through MIST Further.
For oil and gas work in UK waters, fitness is certified by a doctor registered with Offshore Energies UK. A standard certificate runs for two years. Shorter ones are issued in some cases.
In the United States, the Maritime Transportation Security Act requires a TWIC card for workers who need access to secure areas of maritime facilities and vessels. The Transportation Security Administration issues it, and it is valid for five years from the date of issue.
